How long a hair topper lasts, and what shortens its life

People usually ask this before buying, and the honest answer has a range in it — because lifespan depends much less on the piece than on how it is treated. Two identical toppers can be a year apart in condition after eighteen months.

The realistic figure

A human-hair topper worn daily and cared for properly lasts one to two years. Worn a few times a week, three years or more is normal. Those numbers assume gentle washing, correct drying and no heat abuse.

Note what wears out. The hair itself, if it is good hair with the cuticle intact, outlives the base. What fails is the foundation — the lace or mono at the front edge, and the points where clips attach and pull.

What actually shortens it

Sleeping in it. The largest avoidable factor by a distance. Eight hours of friction against a pillow, every night, wears the base and tangles the hair at the nape. If a piece has to stay on overnight, a silk pillowcase and a loose braid help — but taking it off helps far more.

Washing too often, or too roughly. A topper has no scalp feeding it oil, so it does not need washing like your own hair. Every eight to twelve wears is usually right. Rubbing the base while washing is what tears it.

Heat. Straighteners and dryers on high are the fastest way to turn good hair dry and brittle. Low heat, and not every day.

Sun and salt water. Both strip colour and dry the shaft. There is no scalp to replenish it, so damage is cumulative and permanent.

Clipping in the same spots forever. Clips pull on a small area of your own hair and on a small area of the base. Moving the position slightly, week to week, spreads the wear on both.

What good care looks like

Wash with a sulphate-free shampoo in cool water, moving the hair rather than scrubbing the base. Condition the lengths, not the roots. Press the water out with a towel rather than wringing. Dry on a stand, away from direct sun. Store it on a stand or in the box it came in, never crumpled in a drawer.

In Manila humidity, one addition: make sure it is genuinely dry before storing. A damp piece in a closed box develops an odour and, in the worst case, mildew at the base.

Repair, before replacement

People often replace a topper that could have been repaired. Reknotting thinned areas, replacing a worn front section and renewing clips are routine work in our atelier, and they typically cost a fraction of a new piece. A topper that feels tired at eighteen months is frequently a base problem with good hair still attached to it.

Bring it in before it fails completely. A front edge that has started to fray can be rebuilt; one that has torn through takes more.

The questions, in short

How long should a topper last?
One to two years with daily wear; longer if worn occasionally.
What wears out first?
The base — the front edge and the clip points.
Can a topper be repaired?
Usually, and it is far cheaper than replacing it.
Does sleeping in it shorten its life?
Yes, more than anything else you control.

Where we stand on this

We would rather repair your topper than sell you a new one, and not out of charity — a piece that lasts is the best argument we have for the way we make them.

If yours is starting to feel thin at the front or the clips no longer hold, bring it in and let us look before you decide. Quite often the answer is a repair and a proper wash, not a replacement.
